In July ACTS Scholars Jasmine J. Escareno and Qwajarik S. Sims attended First Lady Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher initiative – Beating the Odds Summit at the White House in Washington, D.C. The pair were nominated by the Asomugha Foundation and were selected out of hundreds of graduating high school seniors throughout the country.
The summit provided over 140 students who had overcome great odds to go to college, with access to resource-rich panels and discussions about preparing for their academic journey ahead. Topics included how to get academic support in college, how to form strong networks at school, and how to attain a sense of “career fluency” to identify opportunities for the future. The day also featured a concert from Wale and a surprise visit from President Barack Obama.
In the fall Jasmine will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Qwajarik will be attending Haverford College.
A special thank you to Eric Waldo and Stephanie Sprow from the Reach Higher initiative and the office of the First Lady for extending this nomination invitation to the Asomugha Foundation, Inc. – ACTS.
